Who we are

We exist to know and show the love of Jesus in the Yorktown area and beyond.

Love is not a feeling, but a sacrificial action done for the benefit of another. The most powerful demonstration of love in the history of humanity is when Jesus died on the cross in our place for our sins.

“This is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us by sending His Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” — 1 John 4:10

The Love of Jesus

The cross is the most powerful demonstration of love in history — Jesus died in our place, for our sins.

Knowing

Jesus does not want you to merely know about His love intellectually but to experience His love personally.

Showing

We seek to love others with both our words and works, just like Jesus.

The Yorktown Area & Beyond

We are rooted in Yorktown and reach people all over the Hampton Roads Area — with a heart for reaching the nations too.

Why is the church named Arroyo?

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

— Isaiah 43:18–19

An arroyo is a river in the desert. The Bay Area in many ways is a spiritual desert — it is the most unchurched area in the United States. We believe that God has called our church to be a river in the middle of this spiritual desert. We bring life into the desert by knowing and showing the love of Jesus to the Bay Area and beyond.

Life flows where the river runs.A church rooted in Livermore, bringing living water to the most unchurched region in America.

Our beliefs

What anchors everything we do.

Six convictions, rooted in Scripture, that shape who we are.

We believe the gospel is the good news that God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life. All have sinned, but Christ died in our place and rose again so that we can be forgiven, adopted into God’s family, and live eternally with Him. (Ephesians 2:8–10, John 3:16)

We believe there is one true God who exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — three equally divine persons in perfect community. (Matthew 28:19)

We believe all 66 books of the Bible are divinely inspired, inerrant, and authoritative — given so we can know Jesus and live in relationship with God. (2 Timothy 3:16–17)

We believe every person is created in the image of God with intrinsic value. We are also sinners by nature and choice, separated from God until we place our faith in Jesus. (Genesis 1:27, Romans 3:23)

We believe every person exists forever — either with God in heaven through faith in Christ, or separated from Him in hell. God desires that all would come to know Him. (Revelation 21, John 14:2–3)

We believe the local church is the family of God in a place — gathered for worship and teaching, scattered to love and serve, organized under qualified leadership. (Acts 2:42, Matthew 28)

Our values

Five things we refuse to compromise on.

01

Gospel Centered

It is all about who Jesus is and what He has done!

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3
02

Grace & Truth Together

Grace without truth is weak; truth without grace is harsh.

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us... full of grace and truth.” — John 1:14
03

Word to the World

We help others see how God’s word applies to daily life.

“I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.” — 1 Corinthians 9:22b
04

Real Community

Come as you are — but refuse to stay as you are.

“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” — James 5:16
05

Sacrificial Service

We refuse to be spectators — we strive to sacrificially serve God and others.

“Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship.” — Romans 12:1

Elder board

Shepherds & stewards.

Each member of our elder board meets the qualifications for elders found in Titus 1:5–9 and 1 Timothy 3:1–7. The elders shepherd the church body, steward its resources, and provide support and accountability for our Lead Pastor. Our elders also serve as the board of directors for St. Luke's United Methodist Church since every non-profit corporation is required by law to have a board of directors.
