Who we are
Love is not a feeling, but a sacrificial action done for the benefit of another. The most powerful demonstration of love in the history of humanity is when Jesus died on the cross in our place for our sins.
“This is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us by sending His Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” — 1 John 4:10
The cross is the most powerful demonstration of love in history — Jesus died in our place, for our sins.
Jesus does not want you to merely know about His love intellectually but to experience His love personally.
We seek to love others with both our words and works, just like Jesus.
We are rooted in Yorktown and reach people all over the Hampton Roads Area — with a heart for reaching the nations too.
Why is the church named Arroyo?
“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
— Isaiah 43:18–19
An arroyo is a river in the desert. The Bay Area in many ways is a spiritual desert — it is the most unchurched area in the United States. We believe that God has called our church to be a river in the middle of this spiritual desert. We bring life into the desert by knowing and showing the love of Jesus to the Bay Area and beyond.
Our beliefs
Six convictions, rooted in Scripture, that shape who we are.
Our values
It is all about who Jesus is and what He has done!
“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3
Grace without truth is weak; truth without grace is harsh.
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us... full of grace and truth.” — John 1:14
We help others see how God’s word applies to daily life.
“I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.” — 1 Corinthians 9:22b
Come as you are — but refuse to stay as you are.
“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” — James 5:16
We refuse to be spectators — we strive to sacrificially serve God and others.
“Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship.” — Romans 12:1

Elder board
Each member of our elder board meets the qualifications for elders found in Titus 1:5–9 and 1 Timothy 3:1–7. The elders shepherd the church body, steward its resources, and provide support and accountability for our Lead Pastor. Our elders also serve as the board of directors for St. Luke's United Methodist Church since every non-profit corporation is required by law to have a board of directors.
